3ds max 2011 - material application

I was practicing with 3ds max 2011 and I arose with a problem to which I can't

My problem is:

..may depend on the settings you have in the display/display tab of the control panel ...this can be a cause, i.e. on how it has max set to display you in "shaded" mode...even if it is a fleble hope....or...you have verified that the editing is closed?that if you select the object you should not select the face or edge or the vertex...but the polygonal object (or meshque)

-1-to change the display settings you have to go to the control panel (what defoult is on the right, where there are the tabs to create and edit objects), the 5th tab is that "display"..check the settings...(check the defoult setting from the guide (first f1 key with max open)
-2-in 3dmax all created or imported entities (objects,lights, rooms etc.) to be modified you must select them and go into the modify tab of the control panel, if you have assigned a material to the whole object, then selecting one or more polygons assigned to a part of the object a second material. to select a polygon you have to activate from the modify card the selection of the polygons and the icon is highlighted, if you do not tick on it, closing in fact the possibility to select the polygons, you could have problems..I years ago I had a similar problem it seems to me to remember that the reason was the latter.....if you want.. send me the part of file that gives you problems... .
