It's nitrus' fault, changes the directx, indeed, you should use nitrus, but I believe in 2011 it was not yet indicated by that name...

nitrus is a viewport display system introduced in the 2012 or 2013 version of 3ds max. allows you to have a better preview with realistic shading with shadows and reflection, ao, etc.
