Hello everyone
work in architecture studio that deals with a lot of building (buildings of new buildings, renovations, lottizations, etc.).
as for the 2d we use autocad for the 2d, and for its purpose we find ourselves well;
for the 3d we use allplan and to say the truth is going a little tight: it is a little too "rigid"; It does not allow us to model outside its logic.
We'd like to replace allplan, but with what?
I was told very well about archlines: is it true that at present it would be the best (I understand that you cannot decree a better bim in absolute)?
in this forum I am reading a lot of revit; compared to allplan and archline?
hello and thank you all

Unresolvable dilemma...
the initial point is that autocad goes well for everything, starting from simple lines up to 3d, both for meccanca, the building, and all the rest ... including an easy programming of additional resources (e.g.:lisp), the interchange of files, etc...
then we realized that in the specific fields, first of all the mechanics, and then for the construction, with specific software modeling was spared a lot of time, but the software had limited functions:
- the internal sw programming for the dedicated gadget
- no complete operationality on complex forms
- the interchange with other sw
and plan are the various sh have implemented their products, but unfortunately they have had to select "a certain thread of development " that does not cover all "the matter" design, and still are upgrading their products ....

returning to your question is simple to answer: the software that covers all fields does not exist, so it is necessary that everyone carefully evaluates their needs and turns to the sw that most meets their needs

the 3/4 most used architectural sw have now been unseen, and everyone has their own prerogatives and not; all sh leave the possibility to use their own sw for a certain period free of charge, but unfortunately to use it fully you have to know and learn to use it (time and money), and so on...

what I can tell you, oriented in a sw that is constantly developing, have additional or external "modules" that can complete the use in various specific fields, which has a good interface (interchange) with other sw of the same field, etc...
but then the decision is yours...

the opinions of those who use their sw will certainly be positive; that it consosce well 2, means that it has abandoned one for the other, and therefore the abandoned one did not meet its needs, and with time, save rare cases, will have abandoned use (and knowledge of the old sw) so unfortunately the opinions are always in a unique sense in favor of the sw used

I answer to jeanpier01.

I am engineer, I teach in a technical institute and I carry out free profession; I bought allplan in the distant 1996 paying him an eye of the head (at that time it was perhaps the only truly versatile sw in the architectural field).

As I learned to know it I realized that it allows to do many interesting things, but besides being very rigid it is extremely slender and in some cases it just does not allow to get automatically certain results or to be used quickly to get good level of detail from 3d.

some colleagues use archlines and are satisfied (they are amazed when I explain how with allplan I have to resort to 3d modeling to get certain things that archline performs in a simple way parametric way).

personally I was very impressed by some demonstrations of revit 2010 (it is not all gold what glitters, but the demonstration I witnessed glittering a lot) in which I could appreciate some of the functions that with allplan would be "impossible".

I have to make a purchase now (talk for architectural design) I think I would choose revit (beyond everything is autodesk, which is not to neglect for import/export).

Good Christmas.
