connections between variables and pdm

a curiosity that maybe someone using a pdm can make me clear.
We admit to having in a file par a variable, whose value is dependent on another variable present in another file (par or asm it is).

if I don't have the pdm, just open the variable table of the "son" and copy-paste the variable of the "father".
What if I use a pdm and then save the parts on the database instead of on the file system?

Sorry about the naive question but I don't know anything about pdm, for example I don't know if par and asm files exist even when using pdm and database only takes care of tracking links between the parts, or all model files end up in my sql database and no longer exist as separate files.

from that I know the pdm deals "only" to keep a database of links between the parties and any changes, but the assemblies are still the usual files. Perhaps they change their name depending on how they are stored by the pdm and are blocked in read-only, but still the cad has direct access to the files

Hi.
Thank you for the answer. So, even if I use a pdm, when I generate a new file I have to tell him in which folder to save it and what name to give it? I thought they were all delegates to the pdm

depends on the pdm, those based with file system storage keep links. those based with file storage within the database, in many cases interrupt the link before storage.

I don't know the evolution of the last three years so it can be that things have changed.

Hi.
I thank you for the answer, the question arises from the fact that maybe a customer will ask me to solidify some machine groups currently in 2d. I understand therefore that before doing the job it is worth a ride home to them and see how the pdm they have works.

you should not have any problem, using a pdm (word of insights combined with sql, in other cases may be different) is completely transparent to the user, the program works exactly as if the pdm was not implemented.
t... so, even if I use a pdm, when I generate a new file I have to tell him in which folder to save it and what name to give it? I thought they were all delegates to the pdm
Yes, the organization in folders, although "virtual" since everything will end up in the big file of the database, is identical in everything to what you would use using the only file system.
Among other things, we also use i-deas 10 nx and in the end, although with very different processes and methods, the "definitive" data should be arranged in folders and subfolders.

you better, see if you can explain how to import data into insights (I suppose we talk about this pdm, but if it were another problem is the same), so you can structure the data in to make them more easily "digestible" during importing.
from my point of view however should not be your problem, you do the job and save the fles in a single folder; In this way you avoid having to map folders and subfolders of origin with the corresponding folders and subfolders of destination, provided that the customer has no objection to reorganizing files once imported into the database.
Bye.

what they proposed to us if he takes care of putting the various files in the right position, and in the case of rename them, after scanning the links and having verified any conflicts with more recent versions of the files. Basically, you say "get this together" and he does everything. Well, okay, with the obvious limits. .
