usual speech: depends on what you have to do. autocad is a generic design software, that is it has no specialization so it's okay a bit for everything but there are other software or applications that are specially designed for a given sector and greatly speed up the work.
this applies both to drawing 2d, for placing on the table and for modeling 3d.
let's say that autocad is the most popular software (thanks to the pitareria) and therefore it is more likely to start with that, especially out of the schools and in a few then drop it to try other roads
