I have read dani-3d, but to be honest my doubts have not resolved. both when I make the rename, and when I open the famili table I always have the two columns of common name and instance name (I have the English version) and still remains dark as mastering the two things.

In fact there is not much to understand ... the common name is an additional description than the object code, if it can serve, one can use it, otherwise ... nothing. I was curious too and I wondered what I could use it, but I practically didn't do anything about it.

I used it to identify commercial components from drawing components (in this case the common name was identical to the model name).
if properly exploited, it returns very useful in plm research (all components of the same supplier or project), or to create filters in table tables and levels.
the trouble according to me, is that ptc makes it mandatory to manage and this in many cases is an additional thing to do not have inconsistencies in some cases.
personally I recommend to manage it only as categories of details (minutes, commercial components, components supplier xyz, uni xxxx etc.)
