difference between volume and surface thickness

work in the surfaces I have seen that there is the possibility to give a volume to the surface but I have also seen that once the surface is created and you go into the environment part desing you can give the thickness.
my question is this, what difference is there between volume and thickness?

by definition the surface does not have thickness, so it cannot have volume.
as soon as you check a thickness, even minimum, generate the volume.
surface without thickness = area
surface + thickness = area+volume

surface+thickness= volume, not surface+volume=thickness.
