I work with 3d design more in the mechanical sector.
I would like someone to explain the difference between rapid prototyping and a 3d stapma.

I'm not well informed.... Does that sound like the same?

there are various definitions, but I would say that rapid prototyping and 3d printing are two identical terms.
the correct term would be additive production, i.e. producing an object by adding material (layer construction).
abroad with 3d printing refers to all additive manufacturing machines, both for plastic and metal.
with the appearance of low-cost machines (usually with fdm technology) additive production has become "fashion" and for simplicity we talk about 3d printing.

sintering (sls)
stereolitography (sla)
metal (dslm - ebm)
professional fdm (stratasys)
cheap fdm (e.g. makerbot)
resin (objet - mjm)
