How do you think I started working with vw? It happened at the university, here in genova, when still, among the various courses of "automatic design" based on autocad was one of assisted architectural design. the teacher, with whom I then did the thesis (just on cads to objects, which allowed me to become betatester), taught to understand rather than to use a specific cad. in fact he, although mac-user using vw (then minicad) allowed to use any software for the exercise.
Once I graduated, if I immediately found work it was precisely because I knew vw.
Unfortunately I recognize that things have changed.
I take care of teaching new collaborators and stationers who come to study the basics of software and, alas, most of them never heard of it... And in these 9 years of people I have seen it pass. :
I believe that the basic error is to be sought in the architectural faculties where, instead of focusing on specific software for architects and design, you continue to predict a tyrant.

That said, those who produce software come to us with their work. I know what kind of work is behind the programmer engineers, so I fully understand their policies to safeguard their products. vw is no longer "round". That's what I think is good.
the edu version is the designer, the most complete, is has no limitations. stuff to lick your fingers. and, since students do not produce, but they are always on expenses, they deserve it for free.
it is clear that with what they have in their hand, the danger of "fuges" must be limited to those who instead produce an income with software; so to reflect on it is right that the edu version is not compatible with the commercial one.
I don't even think that a watermark in the press or pdf is this great damage... and if you have teachers annoyed by this, it means that there is something wrong with their heads and their professional ethics.

Finally, an observation on education versions: I am (for a few years) a teacher of technology and design in geometri institutes and I would like to do something interesting and really formative for students but according to you why I should break the boxes with a program that does the work files of the version education different from those of the professional version? It's clear that if I have my professional design to "profile" the students, it's also good for me, but if I have to pack it for class practice, it's gonna break me a lot, or not?
What does it make versions of incompatible files?

on this aspect you have misinformed: the edu version has no problem opening the file made with the professional version. This practice is followed by vectorworks, but also by other products, such as archicad.
But it is a shame that your experience with vectorworks has been so negative.
