hi, it depends on the level, if you have the level blocked (see a bolt next to the written "background") when gates remain white, if you unlock the level (double click above the level) when you delete see the rock.

you have to set the non-transparent but white background or any other color that suits you.
for photoshop the transparent is represented by chessboard white-grey, ie the gray and white squares are the level of transparency.
when using photoshop always uses levels:
1) transforms the background into a level by double clicking on it;
2) with the magic wand or with the magnetic lasso select the white background;
3) when you have selected what you have to delete use the canc key;
4) save png image because it is the only format that allows you to have transparency
