I recommend you first of all, to load on the generic, all materials that interest you also for variants, and to activate only what interests you for the generic.
then the selection of the material, do it from the family table table (you should look at the selection via drop-down menu), then regenerate the whole family.

to be more precise you have to enter the ptc_material_name parameter in family table where then a drop-down menu of the available materials appears.but sin that does not properly handle the aspects (colors of creo).
