the office of the United Nations of Rome invites young graduates to submit their candidacy for the associated experts program and young officials of international organizations.
the Associated Expert Programme and Young Officials of International Organizations, also known as Jpo Programme, is a multilateral technical cooperation initiative funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Directorate-General for Development Cooperation, which allows young Italians, in possession of a degree title and who perform 30 years by 31 December 2009, to have a training and professional experience in international organizations of the UN system for a period of two years.
the programme is also open to citizens from developing countries. the purpose of the programme is twofold. On the one hand, it promotes the technical cooperation activities of international organizations by associating young officials with development initiatives, on the other hand, allows young people interested in international careers to carry out important professional experiences that in the future could encourage recruitment by organizations themselves or internationally.
the programme originates from a resolution of the economic and social council of the united nations issued in 1961, with which the collaboration of volunteer staff was approved and encouraged - on financing of the country of origin - to the realization of initiatives and programmes of development cooperation. the Italian accession to this initiative, which took place in the mid-1970s, has assumed over the years the configuration of a real program, with an extended participation in the Secretariat of the United Nations and its organs, to numerous specialized agencies of the onu system and to other international organizations with which the Italian government has stipulated specific agreements.
The information activities on the programme, the collection and pre-selection of applications are carried out by the Human Resources Office for International Cooperation of the United Nations (Hric/undesa) of Rome in collaboration with the Directorate-General for Development Cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
applications for participation in the programme must be drawn up on the specific form, (depending on www.undesa.it) signed in original, accompanied by a certificate of degree (with a list of exams supported) and a photo board. Applicants who have obtained qualifications after graduation must send copies of the relevant certificates.

does not make the postmark authentic. In the event of a registered postal or dhl sending, the date of dispatch before 2 November will not be deemed to be eligible for applications beyond the date limit. applications received via e-mail or fax will not be considered valid.
the requirements necessary to be able to access the pre-selection are:
Italian nationality or a developing country
one of the following academic titles (the candidates who attended foreign universities must have a master's, maîtrise or equivalent qualification):
degree title obtained according to the old university order
degree qualification obtained according to the new university order
degree title obtained according to the new university order accompanied by the achievement of a master's degree
age not exceeding 30 years (33 for medical graduates)
excellent knowledge of Italian (for Italian nationals' candidates) and English
candidates applying for the 2009/2010 edition should be born after January 1, 1979, if graduates in medicine after January 1, 1976.
knowledge of other foreign languages, having gained previous professional experience and possession of other academic qualifications constitute additional positive elements for evaluating the curriculum vitae and the professional profile of candidates. searched profiles are varied and change according to requests submitted by international organizations. from generic qualifications (jurist, economist) to more marked specializations (power expert, environment, development economics, human rights, etc.).
the preliminary assessment of applications for admission to selection tests is carried out by representatives of the undese. This assessment is submitted to the verification of the nations united taking into account the university, professional and linguistic qualifications of candidates, and the types of assignments submitted to the attention of the foreign ministry by international organizations and approved by it. This preliminary phase ended, pre-selected candidates carry out (normally between April and June) the final selection interview in Rome with representatives of the various target organizations.
These organizations are the only ones responsible for the results of the final selection. selected candidates can serve both at the central offices of organizations and in their decentralised offices, taking care of the implementation of technical cooperation projects and initiatives in developing countries. they are recruited as officials at the initial levels of the professional category (p2 step 1, for the United Nations system, and equivalent in other international organizations), with contracts of a renewable year for a second year. However, it should be noted not only the strict selection to which applications are submitted, but also the difficulty in obtaining an employment at the expiry of the contract of an associate expert or a young official. at the conclusion of interview sessions, and before the official recruitment by international organizations, selected candidates take part in a two-week training and orientation course at the united national system staff college of torino. the course is also an important occasion for meeting and aggregation of the group of young officials who, although coming from different educational paths and being destined to operate in different contexts, are animated by common ideal thrusts.
