It seems to me that I have understood that the faces of the polyhedron are divided into various pieces and consequently also the image is divided on each of them. Therefore it is as if you were to apply an adhesive film for car on a side, door included, and after with a cutter you have to hack the profile of the door separating it from the rest. basically the image is handled whole, and nothing changes in how many parts it is divided. by analogy the rendering should be applied on a thick part of infinitesimal thickness overlapping the pieces below, perhaps, if possible, applying a slight transparency to see also the pieces...
