mesh creation for export in stl

hello to everyone I wanted to ask if someone can help me, but I have to export a file to stl for rapid prototyping. from what I have understood I have to make my object as not a set of surfaces, but as a solid and to make this a nurb to mesh and creates mesh. At this point I have to give it a thickness that in my case is 3 mm,
- Do I do the mesh offset or the original project and then do cloud to mesh of the offset?
- I have tried in both ways but always remain surfaces maybe I can understand but nn turns out a solid!!
I need to give thickness for rapid prototyping but I can understand how to make me create the solid thickness and not two surfaces with the vacuum in the middle.
I hope I've been clear, thank you all!

do the normal offset of the surfaces and then create of the ruled around (to close) after which you should save in stl

thanks in the meantime for the answer... but for normative what do you mean skin and square?! Sorry, but I'm not very expert on alias.
and cmq does not have to be full inside so that there may be a prototyping, just that the figure is closed?
Thanks again

I don't even know alias.
I mean a surface that passes from two edges, usually this surface is called ruled or lined searches on the various types of surfaces and then closes all the contour
