Good morning to all, I am a student enrolled in the faculty of mechanical ing and I am making a tesin for the examination of plates and shells with ansys 10.
I just signed up in hope to exchange useful advice on ansys.
of course I begin with a request for help..........
I am studying a semi-spherical dome of thin thickness subject to weight just with shell63 element and I can not understand how to make a spherical mesh like the attached one made with strauss7.
thanks to all

I'm happy when trying to make a decent mesh!
cmq in your case nothing simpler, remove the shell until you have only the circumference arc to 90, meshi and extrude it of revolution. . Even if I wouldn't do it like that because you'd get "bitter" elements out of the ball pole.
cmq is a good start.

to what loads are subject to the "brownwash"? If they were asymmetrical, you should make a 2d asymmetric model (e.g. plane 42 by activating a keyoption) which, in addition to giving you a simpler and lighter model, would make you look more beautiful on the exam.. .
if the loads are not asymmetrical you could still do a 2d analysis with harmonic elements....but by experience I upset you because the time required to prepare the model is huge!

thanks a thousand boys....; I will try both the solution with shell (although in fact the elements at the top of the dome are quite distorted) and the asymmetric one with plane 42 since the load is the weight just and then the comparisons.
Thank you very much!! ! !
