socially, yes. a degree in engineering when it comes to "what work you do" and it says mechanical engineer or when you apply for a position, so also within the same firm... common thinking, average omino or even 90% of people is that you are just like a technician. I'm going to know.
then if you start specifying ah I have laurated here and there, etc. etc. maybe reevaluate a little but if you say I'm an engineer, in their minds you are a cleaning technician.

abroad from what I know, there is not much difference between the garzone that brings pizzas and an industrial designer (e.g.) to social level.
people are considered as resources (no matter their social/cultural situation) to grow more than exploit them.
There is, at least for what I have seen and heard, the classic blue/white collar challenge.
