partial transparency

Hello everyone,
once again to ask for your help.. .
I should make renderings of a set with an external component that encloses almost all other components, and being the whole quite symmetrical, I wanted to make transparent only part of this external component
I don't know if I've been too clear but I hope you can help me.

you can not make transparent the symmetrical half of a part.
only with some make-up of the type that for a rendering can go well, i.e. design the two half as distinct parts that I mount together.
At this point I only give transparency to one of the two.

In fact in the meantime I arranged in inserting in total a copy of the piece (from which I removed a part) in shading and I made transparent what was already under, getting the desired effect.
Maybe you can come in handy to any.
