Good evening to all,
I would like to have some advice from those who have had a similar experience to mine.
I am a mechanical engineer and currently working as a mechanical designer within a technical office for a metal company for about 4 years. I have always been involved in design from the relationship with customers/sellers, then support the mechanical workshop department and assembly department, until I draw up test and testing manuals. After bringing home excellent results these years, I was proposed a change of role but in a very different business sector from where I am now. the proposal previews the role of manager of the department planning, logistics and purchases.
Of course, from a career point of view, it is a good leap forward, but I should give up the work of a designer in which I can now move without any problem. I would also go to play a role in which I have a minimal experience and should start from scratch. I ask you: Has anyone ever dealt with such net changes within the same company? how did you face such a radical change in your worked path? moving from one sector to another, considering also type and role proposed, is it always beneficial?
I'm curious to have some opinion about it. thank you in advance to those who want to share their thoughts.

Excuse the question but how did this proposal come? ?
what leaves me puzzled is that for any position they always ask "how many years of experience do you have? " and here they propose it to zero experience.

leaves many doubts about the seriousness of the company

I was lucky enough to work in medium-sized companies, where when needed a professional figure to cover a new job or strengthen a productive and commercial department, the profiles and aspirations of those already employed in various sectors were evaluated. So it was for department leaders, production programmers, warehouse, commercial department, sellers, etc. until a case where, a technical diplomat initially inserted in the technical office, (my colleague) and subsequently in the commercial field, after having experienced also in different companies, now is the first company that had assumed it, considering that this company now invoices over 1 mld.
I was also offered in addition and accepted, the task of marketing manager without having experience (in a period when the web was not yet popular) and, after a course of about a year and sacrifices, as I had to devote time to the study also in the private sector, I managed to dexter me quite well.
I myself, later when I was managing a medium-sized company, I first tried to value those who already worked there and who knew the skills, seriousness and desire to improve.
to tell you that you are offered a great opportunity of growth, even economic, to demonstrate the confidence that the company has in your current work and for the results achieved, so you should:
- make you explain what you have to do exactly (initially) for the type of your company and what expectations are; if it is not a very big company you will learn first;
- assess whether this type of job (which excludes design but the experience in this field can be very useful in contact with production and customers) you like and if you are willing to follow courses (which you will need to ask who made the proposal);
- to understand whether in the light of current business conditions, relationships with colleagues from other departments and the type of activities required, is a type of assignment that stimulates or worries you, but you can always ask to try for a certain period; if you do not like it, you can always return to the current job;
- assess whether you feel like working in multitasking and team with a certain degree of responsibility and also devoting extra time to document and improve your knowledge.

Look at me. this document to get an idea but don't worry, even if it seems a remarkable commitment, small steps and with the collaboration of other colleagues you can do it.
moving from one sector to another, considering also type and role proposed, is it always beneficial?
depends on your expectations; In my opinion, if you like the challenge to try this job, yes.
It is a type of job that, after a few years of training, will allow you to enrich your knowledge and to be very attractive professionally for companies of almost all sectors and that is rewarded very well and will open you new horizons.

if I can add, also widespread in multinationals, I believe with appellations like "lateral move" or similar . very widespread among those who want to make careers fast (which generally remains a period between 2 and 4 years in a specific position ) .

When I was managing a medium-sized company, I was first trying to value those who already worked there and who I knew about the skills, seriousness and desire to improve.
to have (more) responsible so ...

planning, logistics and purchases will be very disappointing from the technical point of view for you that you have experience as a designer.
accept it only if you are interested in the economic side.
