references for mechanical design?

Good morning.
to our team was commissioned a project of a car we had never done.. not having references and never having made a similar project obviously it was not easy. the old way always works, but I was wondering: does not exist an open source site where you can download 3d of machinery/plants type to have a reference on how to go to work?
seems an absurd question but having a reference of a car maybe gone out now obsolete but that at the time it worked can always be convenient for having the already ready "concept" and going to resurrect it you end everything.
(I think not for a speech of know how.. but try not harm!)

finding projects on the net is impossible.
