Fortunately that there is the fem analysis otherwise we would spend the whole life making matrices and calculating derivatives and integrals. In the end it is good to know the mathematical sense that lies behind the various options of the software... but in my opinion you can forget how to calculate a matrix. then depends on the applications... if you develop something experimental, very expensive, then you can also have a competence in a much more advanced fem (style give me a sheet and a biro and spend in two hours that I give you the result of internal tensions along a plane wing). and anyway, the more you know and the better it is:finger:
