I have to do some sort of reverse starting from a stl file that was provided to me.
It's the first time I've done such a job on inventor, I need to move the stl to direct it so that I can use it as a reference to build the solid.
the command moves bodies does not work, is there any specific command to place/seat mesh?

I think the most correct workflow is to have mesh in a reference part and work together with a new part referring to the mesh part

If you are forced to work in the same part you can direct the front view from the viewcube as you think, it is one of the viewcube options

to make this use rhino, you also use it,and I project the profiles on the 6 orthogonal floors

I don't use it anymore, fortunately I add.

at the end I followed the advice of rt.infixes and I created a set where I positioned and oriented the stl.
I am surprised at the total lack of tools in inventor to be able to work on mesh.
At least the possibility of positioning them, measuring them etc. I thought it was the least that had to be there.

instead...:frown:

technomodel in the 2018 version added something for mesh analysis (measuring) but don't expect much... All in all inventor is not a mesh environment... and anyway analysis and mesh modification is increasingly laborious of solid modeling.... hello

I can understand that not being a mesh environment does not have any tools for changes, but at least the ability to place, measure and manage the minimum needed to reverse I think is the minimum for a cad like that.

Good morning.
in general how would you proceed to reverse a piece in .stl or step for example?
Is there a "scaletta" base you can follow?

Thank you all.

When I used rhino I positioned the mesh, and for this reason it is necessary to move it, burn it etc, then I began to model trying to create the solid or the surfaces as faithful as possible to the original.
were hand-made pieces. in case of more "mechanical" details the measuring instruments are used and reproduces the whole.

stl and step are two very different things. . step can be said that the model is already ready you only miss the modeling story, step is a standard format of solid modeling interchange.... while for the stl things get complicated since it's a mesh and you have to try to rebuild the geometry that developed the object.... I think there's no standard set, every piece is a story to itself, but this is my opinion. . Hi.

does not answer the question, but I add a link to another tool for mesh...
this should allow you to create sketches from the mesh sections (I don't know if in the latest releases is already present as a command).intersect mesh bodyin 2018 actually there are several commands to edit a mesh... but do they only work with the mesh created directly in inventor and not with the imported ones?
