Good evening to all,
I've been wondering for some time now that I've been whipping around my head about speed problems with access to files at work. we do not have a dedicated server but in ut we are 3 designers and some programmers who do not engage the server. There is also an archive of commercial (1 person).
Below is the directory scheme of the server:root.webpfundamentally the structure reflects the philosophy of encoding components: each folder in green, which contains the sldw files, represents a category type indicated by the upper-level folder.
my doubt is that this type of structure, too rigorous and ramified, greatly slows access to files. to reduce the problem I would like to propose to use a dedicated server and reduce the directory levels as much as possible. ideal for me would be the use of a pdm and sldw files stored all within a same directory.

I thank you so far for your availability, your comments and advice.

What is the advantage of having all these subdirectories? I don't know the number of files that you could achieve, but if you set the roots of file names with a certain logic (part numbering), you could also put everything in one folder.
Surely a pdm does order, but you must also have clear ideas on how to configure it. and if you have clear ideas, for groups of people so small, I think it is enough to manage a server with folders.

have few directories with thousands of files each slows everything because windows must brush every time the dir to find what you asked for. pdms with vault create a directory, then when they put in a hundred files create another one, and so on.

when the company started a few years ago, I imagine that my colleagues, reasonably, decided to set up a system so structured so that they have everything neat and easily identifiable using only explores resources. the coding that has been defined is very strict and precise: the files are all perfectly encoded in a unique way and there would be no technical problem in using only one directory. the most difficult limit I see to overcome I think it is especially psychological due to the custom and the "perceived security" that such a structured approach can instill.

the implementation of the pdm had already been evaluated a long time ago then unfortunately everything was flooded. having to continue managing the archive with explore resources what would you recommend?
the idea of using:
- a server dedicated only to solidworks files (it would already be available)
- a single directory or maximum 15, which would contain in both cases thousands of files,
Could it improve the situation?

Thank you both for your availability
