Still the sweep. I'm getting pretty antipathic.

cite by memory, but you could use the filling surface function to close the sweep ends (use the edges of the extremes as a limit) and then deform it as you like and like. . .

p.s. if you want different and more complex shapes/folds you have to pass (as suggested) to the use of surfaces that allow you greater manipulation than the simple dome (which has "obligated" forms).
