Good morning to all,
I am a mechanical engineer with 3 years experience in mechanical plants. On the other day a company contacted me asking if I felt like becoming a commercial engineer for them who sold similar plants to the company where I currently work. the job would be to sell their machinery in the world and then do the transferist. the pay of course would be greater than my current thanks to the transfers. I wanted to ask you: do you think there's more career opportunities for a technician or a commercial? Should I stay in my company and improve my technical skills or do I better switch to business? I would like to put myself in my own right one day so you think it's better to be a commercial engineer or a technical engineer to have the right knowledge/experiences to open something by yourself?

ciao @ marcelloarz, I speak for personal experience, if you are already 3 years of technical experience and now you are horrendous to a job of technical/commercial engineer (not only commercial) in which you will be able to exploit and increase your experience in the field you already know, you will certainly have greater chance of career advancement and greater economic satisfaction. if you also like to travel, if you have no family or binding ties, it will be for some years a tiring but very stimulating work.
Obviously it is not a point of arrival but you will have to constantly be updated on new technologies, on the evolution of the market, understand and meet the needs of customers.
in the future, with the knowledge acquired of the technologies, the market and the customers, you can also put yourself in your own as a consultant or else, or propose yourself to another company in the face of a more important position and a greater pay.

The text is missing.
the question was correctly exposed and he had written that he had already three years of experience at a plant company and had received a proposal from a competing company for the position of commercial engineer and asked precisely if he had greater chance of making career as a technical engineer or as a commercial engineer, with also the possibility, in the future, to start an autonomous activity.

worker student? Let's see if you put the original text back and give us some delucidations about it.

I'm a working student. . Now I'm a graduate, I'm just waiting for the discussion of the thesis... I wanted to delete the question because I had found a similar conversation already in the forum. However it was something like: I have 3 years experience in technical office in industrial plants. . I was offered a job as a commercial technician at a company that also designs her plants. I wanted to know what if, to open a business in the future, it was better a career as a traveler rather than a "pure technique".

Thank you.

I supplement the above with an example of job assigned to the company position of technical-commercial engineer who, depending on the company and the type of products can see assigned other functions or removed some of the above functions.

- realizes with the most suitable techniques and means and after authorization of the management, the study of the company products both new and updated, so as to contribute to the definition of functional and constructive requirements.

- maintains the necessary collaborative contacts with other business functions such as sales, purchases and production.

- in particular with the commercial sector, the collaboration will be realized also through a work of technical-commercial support, tending to favor the acquisition of new customers and the maintenance of those already acquired by adopting valid arguments to favor the company products regarding those of the competition.

- oversees the finished product testing service and experience room, with the aim of continuous improvement of the product through comparison and providing feedback to managers of production departments, times and methods and assembly.

- care for technical-productive-economic comparisons with competition products in order to search for the strengths of their products necessary to build the arguments mentioned above.

- is constantly updated on the technological evolution of products similar to those of the most updated and qualified competition.
it also follows the issues and needs highlighted by customers by compiling statistics and reports that will allow to eliminate recurrent defects and improve product performance by adapting them to various application requirements.

- in the context of effective technical communication will actively follow the preparation of the product documentation by providing the necessary indications to make it more effective and understandable, thus facilitating customers in the correct choice of the product.

As you see, even if you will not be involved in the design, you will still have a very close relationship with the development and updating of the products.
is a business function that can offer you the opportunity to acquire in a few years a great experience and have many satisfactions.
Good luck.

ciao @ marcelloarz I agree with me. @terastore . for what I could see in these years, you will have more chances of career advancement and a higher salary as a commercial technician. one of the important things is that you will have to deal with customers, this possibility will open you many doors. Then it always depends whether the job you like or not. I'd try.
Good luck! !
