use ceiling for dome pens

I would like to draw the pens of a small dome set on rectangular plant and having elliptical plant. Do you think it's possible to use loft to get them? There are some irregularities that I can't overcome with the traditional solid with which the plumes of a square situation are usually derived. . .

a procedure could be to create the surface of the base dome and cut it.
