hi I am a mechanical engineer and I am thinking of buying a workstation to make structural fem calculations (abaqus, ansys, nastran etc) with quite heavy models of 3/4 million knots. my question is: is it better to buy a workstation with two sockets with intel xeon scalable silver 4216 (2400 euros) or 4214 (1500 euros) or a single socket with amd ryzen threadripper 3960x (1600 euros)?
the fact is that xeon processors are very well known in the server field and among other things in this field the amd proposal are epyc processors and not ryzens. However, with a price of 1600 euros the ryzen 3960x has almost triple scores in the benchark passmark. Does this huge advantage also apply in our fem simulations?
