I understand that losing the definition of features you have the feeling of not having control of the part anymore, but the potential is not negligible.

but the message I try to pass is that it is the control of the historian of these parts the only thing I care about at the end not so much the technique of modeling

I realized that your problem has nothing to do with configurations and possible alternatives, but it falls within the management of the versions.

Premitting that I continue to understand little of all this management, I attach an example of how I mean management, which may not be what you need, with a master and parts attached to it.
in the annex you will find the master called part1 in which I created 4 configurations.
then you will find 3 end conf1, conf2, conf3 that are obtained by creating a derivative part (right button on the body in the cut-off list > insert in the new part) that I referred to a specific configuration that, although not having the historical of the functions, remains always bound to his master and will undergo the changes if the latter vien modified.
Finally you will find additional 2 conf1-a and conf1-b files that are nothing but copies of conf1 to which I added functions. of this configured part I can save n thousand variants to which to make as many changes as I want and in case I change the configuration in the master file these verreberal modifications propagated to all conf1-xxxxx files. if then for a specific variant you didn't want the above changes to be propagated just right-click on the first context function?

After a first analysis I can say that it's not what I'm looking for.. but your example lit me several bulbs for different uses than we're talking about.

here management is so varied and complicated that everything sooner or later comes good.

in case I will let you know in a new post for what I used your example-
