Have you tried with a simple part?

if you, you could try to put in visible (in cat v5) a couple of things at a time (if the object is not a single solid and is very complex).

patran imports what is visible in catia v5 at the time of rescue.

no need to have installed caia v5.

what versions do you use of patran and catia?

Catch v5 r18
patran 2004

is the r18 too recent for 2004?

step instead is ok even if from the graphic point is really "essential" but it is not a problem.

What do you mean by essential?
Step formats I use them often with different software, I never had problems.. .
