The phosphatation is fine: It is a chemical process that alters the surface by creating phosphatic crystals chemically linked to the metal substrate. is universally adopted in the automotive sector to provide high shock resistances to corrosion.

Alternatively you can make a cataphoresis: a coating treatment able to provide high corrosion resistance by depositing on the surface a layer of epoxy or acrylic resin.
iveco submits to cataphoresis all its frames before the actual painting! in fact cataphoresis allows a better adhesion of the finishing varnish.

cataphoresis are sure to be black!
If it's just an aesthetic issue you should choose the cheapest of both!

phosphating alone does not offer a great resistance to corrosion; We're about the same level of burn.

If, on the other hand, the phosphatation, especially the iron/zinc one, is the basis for a subsequent painting, then it has almost 100% safe protection, always that the piece does not suffer stresses that go to affect the painted layer.
