for the cfd works like that. As for the fem I basically think it depends on the size of the problem: if it is big stuff that must turn for hours/days then it is feasible and positive a solution that makes the accounts grind elsewhere while the user does other.

However if the simulation is small (we say max half an hour on a quad core) it is still necessary to do it locally.

All in all in my small experience in using fem I have always tried to simplify the problem (of course depends on what you want to get) and use short simulation times. then maybe change variables and turn the simulation back to try to improve engineering for small steps.. .
