common name

Hello, everyone.
It's been a few days that I want to get out of curiosity. occasionally working with ns. beloved cad I come across the mysterious, at least for me, "common name". for example when I create a family table, or with the rename command there is the possibility to assign the "common name".
But what's the point? Is there anyone who uses it?
I attended this forum since 2009 and in 5 years I have never seen a discussion about it. but this "common name" to what is needed?

normally the file name is used for the code and common name for the description.
this because the file name has up to 31 characters and can not contain spaces, commas and special characters (to maintain compatibility with the unix family platforms).
