I do not understand how the two rings are bound together and how the forces apply.
I do not use md and contacts solve them, if I can with the linear gap. in md you have much more evolved functions than I use. So I honestly don't know if I can help you.
I think, even if I did not understand how to apply constraints and loads that your problem is without friction, or knots touch or not touch, and that the deformation of the plates remains low (small shifts) so you could use the linear gap.
If you do a google search with "linear gap nastran" you find a lot of documentation that explains how to create and use them. to create them there is a utility in patran under application linear gap utility.
