Hello, I was asked to make a bas-relief on marble of this shield
nbrq5fj.jpg
is the shield of the "transmission control" of the army.
I thought of taking a photo, convert it into 8bit grayscale bmp and then pass it to the cnc software that I have available that it is able to manage it. would be an image of this kind to understand us

The problem is that I never did this procedure and have doubts.
However make the photo come also out of reflections, being made of metal and lacquered wood, which I suppose compromise the calculation of the depths.
for example the golden frame around it is rounded and the red one immediately inside the concave, with the reflections present would not be uniform, same thing for the world on the shoulders of atlas that is slightly bombed.

calculating also that on photo editing is not a great deal, how should I proceed to get a well done job?

I tried, only "developing" the image I couldn't remove the reflection (in fact we usually use a polarizer filter in the snap stage to remove the reflections on the glasses)

moreover the defects that there are (as you mention) will certainly come out in the relief

you can ask a magician of photoshops or gimps to try to give you a hand...otherwise I have the streets are two: make the relief at least worse, do a stl and then change it ad hoc, or hire a photographer or ask an expert lover to take the photo "perfect" (certain that still life requires a maniacal care)

I have already done things like this for work, but the subject was much simpler...I got it with a macro lens (the subject was small), soft light, easel and remote control... then with artcam embossed and then stl

Thank you for the answer.
I contacted the manufacturer of my cnc, advised me to use a removable matt paint to pass on the shield to eliminate reflections and use a 3d scanner.
