you have to start from the assumption that autocad is a tool for drawing, that is to put on paper what you learn from the course of interior design (space study, how to rationalize them etc.)
besides autocad there are other software that allow you to do that.

If you have basics with autocad you can start and deepen your experience through this software, which is well suited to this type of work. in many job offers relative to interior design is in fact required the use of autocad.
the interior design presupposes that a realistic representation of the interiors for which it is necessary, in addition to the construction of the "scene" also a study of the lights, the use of materials etc.
At this point you can transfer the 3d scene (constructed for example with autocad) to a software like 3ds max for rendering, i.e. application of materials, lighting etc.
There is nothing that can not be built with autocad, especially by architectural work or related to it. so autocad forever. but nothing prohibits that other software can be experienced.
