1) a big customer requires the design of some piping lines and subsequent realization of minor brackets, we have been provided a 3d made in autocad (very heavy) with each line saved as an external reference, I tried to convert it to .step to be able to work in solidworks) but also leaving the workstation 3 days to open the converted file can not open it, I ask you that you are definitely very expert of me if there is a solution sw
2) If I decided to use autocad, is there a way to draw within the overall and then save my design as an external reference in the exact location in which it is located? or how could I design inside the assembly and then save it externalmemnte as xrif?

I ask you that you are certainly much more experienced than me if there is a solution to be able to work in sw.

try to export in step the individual piping lines, otherwise, after a nice cleaning work, import the 3 views of each single piping on the three floors and rebuild them.
say "a very heavy file" in autocad does not allow to understand much. the xfirs can stand from the origin and make them become part of the autocad design, on which then they can work by eliminating the superfluous.

open the door table of references and right click on the xrif and choose join. most likely if the dwg was heavy before with the union of the xrif could become much more.

I try to explain better, I mean autocad, to draw a piping line on the carpentry and then save it as an external reference keeping clearly the position defined by me while drawing it, how should I do? the external reference (xrif) serves the customer to enter only the line drawn in a total 3d that has only him and does not want to provide us for corporate policy.

drawings normally on the reference xrif, at work finished stacchi the customer xrif and save the design. when the customer or who for him will use your xrif will do nothing but insert it on the coordinates 0.0.
