I have 5 years of experience as a mechanical designer automotive industry and fem calculator for a spa company.

a competing company offered me a higher salary and novices closer to home for a role of fem calculator and test. or place strain gauges, thermocouples, speedometers on the machine and then use this information to do fem analysis and process data to get wholer curves etc.

to me it seems a step back as a role, the engineers who dealt with tests that I have seen were usually graduates with an hour experience in design.

to my question if in the future I could return to make the designer the answer was that after a few years you could change.

how do you think of it as a position?
I would be the only one in the company that deals with testing and analysis fem and before me the role had never been covered by anyone

I think there are many considerations to do but as the first approach I would say that if the company that made you the offer is solid and brings you the benefits you said I wouldn't think so.
Of course, I think you're young, so your career will be in the industry you like.
Sometimes in companies you have to do jobs that you don't love but then everything goes, career goes on and satisfaction comes.

still according to my modest opinion more reason if it is a work that is born with you you you can have the opportunity to set up and develop the work according to your modus operandi and create your "nido" to measure.
the important thing is always to not leave a safe thing for an adventure... But I've been talking for fifty years with family... :

to this you must then add that, for the planning of experimental tests and data collection, you will have to compare both with those who have the functions of r&d (if present) and with the design department and so you will still remain in contact with this function acquiring in this way additional skills.
If you've never done so, before accepting, you have to ask the company what resources it has and what their expectations are, comparing also with some in-house managers involved, taking into account that you will have to document on regulations, specific qualities, etc. so study and do specific courses.
if you leave with enthusiasm making it a stimulating job, as it is, you will be able to give the maximum and have in the future many satisfactions, if you are not convinced and are not willing to make sacrifices let you lose and continue in your job in the current company.
It's still a very requested profile.

the researched figure is to test machines already produced to understand why that flange broke after 5 years for example . go with the machine on the field, attacking various types of sensor, and then use this data to do fem analysis and improve the product. also do your own fatigue tests on the test bench with hydraulic cylinder and load cells.

I think it's a bit easier than I had suggested but equally interesting.
unless you are brought to the office routine, this activity will allow you to exit even from the company's scope and know many applications and operating conditions, and the fact that a certain component has been subject to breakage or any other problem that has created the malfunction of the machine, will require you to investigate both the cases and the operating modes by detecting all the possible data, until you evaluate the materials used, the process of working there and the design choices.
you will need to be positive (characteristic that will increase over time) in defining the methods to follow for the tests by checking the available instrumentation and buying the missing one, building (in this case following the suppliers) also the necessary equipment.
if you choose this opportunity you will have to bring with you, in addition to the already acquired design experience,
the curiosity to learn and a good dose of enthusiasm and patience, together with the predisposition to confront you with humility with others with whom you will share this path.

I will support the design through: calculations and analysis fem and analysis at the bench and on the field of the frames produced.
we talk about automotive frames.
