cgm is a vector format (so similar to iges or dxf).
its value is to faithfully replicate the 2d (type a tiff), its defect is to be + "stupid" of a dxf (for example, the odds are lines/fresh/text etc).
is often used as an "intermediate" format when you want to go from a 2d "rich" to a 2d "stupid" like pdf.
