Hello, everyone!
I tried but I didn't find such a discussion, so I'll open one. If someone already knows a topic like this, please send me back:)

So, I'm doing my thesis project in which I have to design a rack (support structure) for experiments in a parabolic flight. as early stages we want to see that the structure resists lf of 9g and I thought to make a fem analysis with patran with simplified elements as you do not know exactly what is in the structure.
what I know are the geometries of the profiles, which are regulated by the company that organizes the flight. As I am using the student version, I do not want to risk the limitations in knots and then I want to simulate the profiles as beams with date section.
However, being the section of these very particular profiles, I did not want to lose my life drawing it with the arbitrary shape tool.
I was therefore wondering if there was a possibility to import only the geometry of the section from solidworks or however a way not to draw it.

Thank you so much to all in advance!

you need to draw the profile section, perhaps exporting from solidworks the determined surface by cutting your section with a plan. then import the iges into patran and light the surface to the arbitrary shape.
If you see you have the option "select surface". create this way the referrary section.

then you have to reduce your 3d model to lines, import lines into your paran model, meshare lines and give previously calculated section properties.

Dear wave,
Thank you very much. I'm trying to import the geometry of the section but it won't let me.
the following error:

"# error reported from application core,# error executing subprogram. reason (errno) = 2. no such file or directory"

looking online I found that apparently it is a problem that happens when patran and nastran are "unconnected". I don't understand why if I launch a simulation goes.

can it be because the student license does not allow to import files?

I have no idea.
I don't have the student version.
You should ask who gave it to you.
Can't even import an iges? It seems a little limited. What version do you have?
If you place the file, I will send you a db 2014 with the imported file.

I have 2014 downloaded from the site of the msc, because being away I can not use that in the computer room of the university.

Thank you so much, you saved my day! !

I uploaded it to this format here because I couldn't otherwise apologize!

Your section has a number of problems. You can't care for that. I also thought it was double symmetrical, but it has a strange shape, I think there is some mistake. verify geometry because it doesn't come back so much.
also had the measuring unit set in meters in the iges file, instead of millimeters.
anyway. I'll attach the surface and patran's db.View attachment Sup_profile.7z

Strange, it's the basis of a profile I downloaded from the manufacturer. I didn't draw it.
Thank you very much.

that does not mean that it is done well,
see the central section as it is irregular. with tangency edges and others not.
I'm not convinced that the design is correct.

I can't tell you if it's right.
I imported it into Patran, but if the original geometry is wrong, I don't know.

when you have time, could you try to open it and see if it is different from the previous one?

Only if you have time, eh, if not in some way I change the one before from Patran.

I opened it but not overlapped. strange points remain

But you don't have a rhino?
open it with rhino. rebuild the edges and then check them out.
is much more versatile for geometries than solidworks

solidworks handles solid, with the surfaces is not at ease. for these better rhino, (or others).
you struggle to correct a surface with solidworks
