solved! thanks to an international forum. . .
the problem is that the window is out of the monitor's field of view.
when the odds dialog box should appear, press alt + space bar, then s (seat), then use the arrow keys to move the dialog box into the screen. the position of the direction slider (the one at 4 arrows) will give you a clue where the window is, for example, if the cursor appears on the right side of the monitor, use the left arrow key to move the window again in the visual area of the monitor.
if necessary repeat the procedure also for the "add scales to object" window.
