I agree with those who say to lean on a pdm, to make the mere transmigration of the bom in the next 2020, is reductive.
in the company from me we use ruledesign pdm and ax as management, the analogue of the basic articles, is made only on the pdm then automatically passed in ax, the variables of pure management, then remain on ax, but the data cad (including the description) are managed by the pdm, on ax ends the revision of the drawings and pdf 2d, which are updated automatically to every modification.
bom is passed at the discretion of the designer, creating a technical bom (non-producible or editable on ax), then decides whether to copy it in a production and integrated if needed.
the data passage between one system and the other, is done through excell tables, generated by pdm and read by ax.
