Bye to all,
I realize that the question is trivial, but what are the main differences between mental ray or v-ray?
I know that mental ray is integrated in 3ds, while v-ray must be installed as a plugin, considering the use to make architectural, both internal and external, which of the two is the best compromise between quality/simplicity?
I could also consider some other makers, always to be used together with 3ds.

excellent products both.

from what I know, the main differences are:

mental ray:
integrated in 3ds, a little more difficult to understand, great engine to render, fast, better for the exterior than for the interior (but it does both good).

v-ray:
external plug with additional fee to 3ds with about 1,000€ of expense (now we are at 2.0, but until recently we were at 1.5 sp5 and if one bought the license years and years ago of 0.1 until today it would not have spent a cent for updates and I think adopt the same policy for 2.0), fast enough in understanding and good results also with the default values, very fast, great for the interior and a little less for the outside.

I quote what is said by the Ilario.. .
apart from that, with what you pay for max, I would "no matter" always mentalray... Unfortunately it is actually more "complicated" than v-ray...
but the "faciility" of use of v-ray often made me notice that renderings are often "all the same"... I speak for versions before 2...
with mentalray (probably in the hands of gurus) I saw quality rendering, in my opinion, higher.. .

but I think they are visible only at very high levels... for rendering made by common mortals, I believe that the two products are equivalent (with ease of use on the v-ray side and power on the mr side)...
I mean, I repeat, I'd try to "slam my head" to use...

We are talking about making facts from ordinary mortals:

At this point I'm more determined to use mr, depending on how difficult it is... but this I think I can only know by trying both of them.

small ot: but what was previously autodesk viz, that is a 3ds without some functions, optimized for architecture, now it is called 3ds max design?

on the autodesk site I find nothing on viz....

I learned to use v-ray for the need of the study where I worked that they used it and a specific historian, but I must say that if it were for me I would learn mental without doubt (only I do not want it after years of specific study of v-ray :) ). I also give you the advice of giga, if you have to start and you do not have a specific need, beat on mental and the results will still be excellent level;).

Yes, viz no longer exists, we say it is max design, but max design is more evolved than it was viz at the time.

They are practically equal, I use them both, vray should be purchased separately, but it is always at avangardia, see rt or the new features of vray 2, but mental ray in the last max realm has been simplified, now it is very simple, is coming iray (interactive motor of mr)..in more' is more connected to max seen that is developed by mental image with autodesk.

I run for mental ray. If you even asked me a couple of years ago I would have said v-ray but now I'm pretty much equal.
