However, I cannot assign different materials to the various solids that make up the part.

I assume that managing everything in multybody is convenient for "simple" details, but then having a distinct and different materials, the only solution is to transform the part - multiple in combination automatically through the management command " creates components", then by the axieme that generated change the individual materials. If the parts are many, change from within the distinct materials, you will have a overview and you will be able to use the paste copy between the cells.
remember, since they are all derived parts of the origin model, the changes always make on the main multybody part
