new family building

Good morning to all,
I am new in the forum and a new revit 2011 user that I am learning to use as self-taught coming from autocad.
I have a question:
I created a new locking family, starting from a metric door, I managed to build it. my problem is: how can I assign to each element of the clamping a specific material (e.g. aluminum frame, glasses, etc.) so as to display it correctly when entering the project?

the specific parameter of material is assigned to each element:
- select the family component
- from the properties of the type, in the material field, select the right button just outside the field
- from the picture associates parameter with family, select Add parameter
- then select a family parameter (material and finishing) with name setting, etc...
repeat for other family components: frame, panel, glasses, handle, etc.
if different elements must have the same material, assign to them the mederm parameter of material in the field "associa parameter with family, without creating a new parameter of material
