outdoor unit protection

I take the cue from the problem of some users of the forum (whose little boy has nicely protected with pwd l'hd and then it is rightly forgotten. . . )
Many USB flash drives are provided with a data protection sw.
but for external hds? Kind of dated?
are there sw available, free of course, that they can do the same and that they are effective?
What are your experiences?
