piece orientation

Hi, I would like to ask for a clarification on how to change a piece's orientation during assembly, without making unlikely manual rotations that turn out little to the egg.
example: I want to change towards the direction along the x axis of the solid reference to the piece, remaining the orientation of the xz plan in the space.
I don't know if it's clear. .
It's a stupid question, but if anyone can suggest me a quick method and pain me, I'd be very grateful.
