premise: naked and raw autocad is not suitable for mechanical design. is not structurally, in the sense that the management of the parts and assemblies with layers or blocks is not efficient. and it's not even for the 3d.

It may be that things have changed (I have used it for three years in mechanical design molds), but if the working philosophy has not changed my judgment does not change.

However:

1) dwg format is still the factual standard for drawing exchange

2) dwg format is still the fact standard for presentation layouts to customers

3) in the plant part, when making a maximum layout of a plant (line layout, casting machine foundations, definition of cable passage and accessory building works) autocad (and the 2d generic) are still victorious towards the 3d (personal opinion)

so it is useful a flourishing that allows you to move independently with the help if you have to do something more (rendering, add a 3d, understand well print styles, set cards and exploit xrifs).

for mechanical design in the strict sense is better the usual classics:

proe, solidedge, solidworks. No, no, no.

personally I would choose to teach solidedge:

you can use it in the classic way for feature or switch to direct modeling, allowing the student not to be uncomfortable in the case at the workplace you find yourself with a cad using one or other philosophy of operation.
