Good afternoon to all,
I'm new to the forum, even if I've been following it for a while.
Then I will explain immediately what the reason for this discussion is.

I am a civil engineer, and for some time I am using ubuntu within my pc, in conjunction with w.
I was looking slowly to bring part of my professional activities, so structural modeling, from classic computational software gui, to something free, but equally powerful and I came across an article in which we talked about salomè and code_aster.

I wanted to ask you first if there was a possibility to use these software for normal civil design, or are more oriented to a mechanical design.
Has anyone ever used them to make plans of buildings or things relevant for example to introduce to the civil genius?

Then I wanted to ask for confirmation of something.
I installed the version of ubuntu 12.04 on my 32bit laptop, is it true that these programs only run on ubuntu 10.04?

Thank you all so far.

I don't take care of these things, but take into account that the software has been developed by the ef in its internal use, and I know for certain that they also use it for structural design of c.a. artifacts, such as vessels containing reactors.
If then the soft is usable for projects to be presented to the civil genius I have no idea.

the current versions of salome-meca (the precompiled bundle of salome and code-aster that I strongly recommend you to use) turn only on 64-bit systems. for ubuntu 12.04 a 64 bit I don't think there's any problem, but I can't be sure because I use different distributions.

thank you for the answer, first of all.
from what you write to me, it seems to me that having a 32-bit PC, I might have problems in the installation.
Could you give me directions on how to install?
what distribution do you use?
Thank you.

you can't run a 64-bit software on a 32-System PC.

Sorry, but why do you use 32-bit ubuntu? Unless the pc is very old, it's almost certain that the processor is 64-bit.

I leave you two links that might interest you:

Good morning.
Unfortunately my processor is 32 bit, because my pc is 2006!! ! ! !
but not wanting to change it because it works wonder, I installed ubuntu and now I was trying to install also salomè-meca.
those links you suggested to me, in part I knew them, only I think I saw that there is only one version of 2010 that could turn on a 32-bit.
