hi dave, to store the display type of models you have to set in confi.pro the option display shade for a simple shading, or display shadewithedges for a shaded display with prominent edges.

then for the configuration of the design environment makes faith another configuration file that has extension *.dtl. My advice is to start with a standard that follows for example the iso legislation, then as you draw you can add and/or change the options that you consider appropriate. after each modification it would be good to save the file.dtl reworked from another part and then to recall it in subsequent drawings or templates.
