surface motifs on the masses

I create a mass, I modify it and get the desired shape then, to the surfaces I apply a surface pattern, hexagons triangles etc.... beautiful! ..... and then?
I mean, on the practical side, what are the surface motifs on the masses for?
I don't understand the utility.
