Just use the right font. then the string if taken equal to one of the variables, like the drawing code, you need to make an asterisk before and after the code, so it is read right. I would say no activx or strange things is just a text.

exist various fonts (code 128 - bar code - code 39 ) but if you try to get the data with an optical gun nom happens nothing

if you search in google barcode font there are different. then there are sites that explain the use, how many figures etc. in 10 minutes you can become superexperienced.
simply if you want a connected and configured gun to read the mouse string you will need to write with the barcode font* and you will see it all bar. The gun reads it. I did it a million times with word, excel and solidworks, just like I told you.

the gun I used was usb and no additional software.... only driver for input system.

in this short time I learned that code39 creates the code as typed, code128 (for example ) uses an algorithm to create the bar code .
